Just read a great research article by Sheree Hurn which provides a great snap shot of the forms of care provided by podiatrists here in Australia.
She reports the typical population seeing a podiatrist for treatment of bunion issues are – Adult 18 to 65 years of age, Older Adults – over 65 years of age and Juvenile – under 18 years of age
As you would expect different groups have different symptoms. The Adult group report the following 3 issues as the biggest problems with bunions.
- Trouble fitting shoes.
- Big toe pain.
- Corns and callus.
The older Adults report –
- Trouble fitting shoes.
- Corns and Callus.
- Big toe pain.
The Juvenile Group report –
- Appearance.
- Family history.
- Big toe pain.
Across the 3 groups Sheree reports that all podiatrists treat these patients with bunions with –
- Footwear advice.
- Custom and prefabricated orthoses.
- Footwear modifications.
